For this recipe we blend raw African baobab with alkalizing lemon juice, and fresh basil. The result is a refreshing lemonade you may want to make by the pitcher. At the Ojio office we love making this rejuvenating lemonade because this sweet herbal blend offers up  a healthy boost of energy during the day.

What is Baobab?

The magical ingredient in this recipe is baobab fruit powder.  This raw and organic pulp powder contains a full spectrum of healthy nutrients and it has a great zingy flavor perfect for smoothies and drinks like lemonade.

A few points on baobab:

  • The dried fruit pulp contains more vitamin C than a bowl of oranges.
  • It is a source of potassium (10%), calcium (10%), and dietary fiber (64%).
  • Notable amounts of other minerals such as magnesium (10%) and iron (15%) are also found in baobab.

Ojio directly sources baobab from farmers growing sustainable “upside down” Baobab Trees in South Africa.  The trees themselves are very large and look like something out of Jurassic Park. It can take up to a hundred years for the trees to begin fruiting their huge nutrient dense pods. To allow these amazing trees to flourish for another few million years baobab powder is sometimes unavailable.

If you would like even further information we put together an extensive article on the origin and history of this amazing fruit. Read more about the benefits or get some.

Tip: If agave isn’t your thing try substituting coconut palm sugar to sweeten things up.
